The Charleroi Bar
|
| |
In Belgium, there is one Bar per legal district (except for Brussels where there are 2 - one French-speaking and one Dutch-speaking).
Once qualified, any lawyer must be registered with the tableau de l'ordre des avocats (Board of Lawyers) for the Bar of his or her choosing,
and he or she will carry out activities mainly in his or her law firm or in the Palais de Justice (law courts).
The main tasks of a Bar are as follows:
- to guarantee the professional competence of its member lawyers (articles, training, recognition of specialisations) whilst exercising a disciplinary function over them
- to facilitate access by any individual to the legal system and to the services of a lawyer (particularly through the organisation of on-call lawyers at legal aid offices).
Consequently, the Bar is made up of:
- A lawyers Association that establishes the internal regulations to which all lawyers and barristers doing his/her articles registered under this Association are subject
- A President of the Bar who directs the Association, assisted by 15 council members elected by other lawyers "
- An administrative office that deals with all requests
- A legal aid office
The activities and decisions of the various Belgian Bars are coordinated and harmonised within the Ordre des Barreaux Francophones et Germanophone (OBFG - Association of French- and German-speaking Bars).

The Charleroi Bar brings together lawyers of all ages, trained in various legal specialisms and practising in all legal areas or who are directed towards specific preferred activities.
Not only does it unite 506 lawyers, it also brings together, at its heart, 128 honorary lawyers - that is, lawyers who have left the Bar to choose the magistracy, government or the private sector. Special connections with these lawyers are maintained through public relations.
The Charleroi Bar also maintains peaceful and long-lasting contact with the legal district Communes, local government, the CPAS (Centres Publics d'Action Sociale - Social Aid Public Centres), chambers of commerce and industry, various professional organisations, as well as the press and media in general. It has a presence on all social and economic fronts.
Mindful of the problems associated with access to the legal system, lawyers from the Charleroi Bar provide on-call
initial legal consultation which is free, just about anywhere in the district
(- Find out more -). They put alternative solutions to court resolution in place as soon as they can for litigation (arbitration, mediation, and conciliation, amicable assessment according to a simplified and swift method).
