The Make-up of the Association Council

| The President of the Charleroi Bar is Maître Xavier BORN |
The President of the Bar is elected by the Bar's lawyers. He presides over the Association Council, directs the staff, provides management of the Association and represents it.
Together with the Association Council, he ensures that regulations and ethical rules are followed.
He receives complaints and investigates them.
If necessary, he instigates disciplinary proceedings.
He irons out or arbitrates in incidents which involve lawyers.
The President of the Bar is assisted in exercising his professional rules and administrative duties by 5 deputies to whom the head of the Association distributes dispute cases
according to their nature (professional ethics - fees - diligence and monitoring of legal proceedings).

The Vice-President of the Bar assists and deputises for the President of the Bar as of right in the event of an impediment.
He is also elected at the general assembly of lawyers.
He is mainly concerned with regulations and the ethical rules. He presides over the Committee for regulations and professional ethics.

| The Association Council is made up of 15 elected lawyers (subject to re-election at the end of each judicial year). |
The Association Council Board is the legislative, executive and judicial body for the Bar.
It draws up regulations, and it ensures these are carried out and observed.
It ensures that the principles of dignity, probity, tactfullness and loyalty are observed.
However the Association Council, apart from its regulatory scope of activities, is concerned with promotion and increasing the prestige of lawyers in the city and the region.
It defends lawyers' professional interests.
It coordinates suitable training for lawyers and their continuing professional development.
The Association Council rules on fee disputes or when required by magistrates, gives its opinion in matters to do with fee statement and cost litigations.
With the Articles Commission and the mentors, the Association Council under the presidency of the President of the Bar checks that barristers doing his/her articles meet their obligations during their 3 years of articles.
The Council also supervises the First Level Legal Aid Office (information-consultation) and Second Level Legal Aid Office (designation of a free lawyer).
Finally, the Council adopts the budget and approves the financial year's statements on the initiative of the treasurer.
